UND’s Perkerewicz rushes for 197 yards in 42-0 football win over South Dakota State (Oct. 21, 2000) GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Running back Jed Perkerewicz (Jr., Washburn, N.D.) rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 37 carries Saturday to lead the UND football team (7-1, 5-1) to a 42-0 win over visiting South Dakota State (5-3, 3-3). The Jackrabbits were shut out for the first time in 94 games dating back to 1991. The score was 10-0 midway through the third quarter, but UND scored three touchdowns and 25 points in a 6:37 span late in the third quarter to break the game open. All three touchdowns came after UND started drives deep in SDSU territory, and on each of those three drives the Sioux scored touchdowns on their second play from scrimmage. One drive started at the SDSU 28 after a blocked punt (Kelby Klosterman to Luke Schleusner 27-yard touchdown on second play); another at the SDSU 33 after a 13-yard punt (Kelby Klosterman to Travis Headley 33-yard touchdown on second play) and the third at the SDSU 29 after the Jacks failed on a fourth-and-one conversion attempt (Jed Perkerewicz 5-yard touchdown run on second play). The 42-point victory margin was the largest by North Dakota over South Dakota State since the Sioux beat the Jackrabbits 43-0 in 1966, and it was the fifth time this season that North Dakota has scored 40 or more points in a game. The Sioux have scored 40 or more points five times during a season in just two other years in school history--during a 7-0 season in 1903 and during a 10-1 season in 1972. UND opened the scoring when Cameron Peterka (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) kicked a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter, capping a six-play, 35-yard drive that featured five runs by Perkerewicz, including a 20-yarder. The Sioux made it 10-0 on their first drive of the second quarter, going 80 yards on 14 plays in 7:11, with the drive ending in a one-yard Perkerewicz touchdown run. Perkerewicz carried 12 times on the drive, including the last 10 plays. The first half ended with the score 10-0. After South Dakota State was forced to punt after three plays on its first possession of the second half, UND responded with Peterka’s second field goal of the game, this one a 19-yarder, to take a 13-0 lead. The 13-play drive included 10 runs by Perkerewicz and took 5:12. On the Jackrabbits’ next possession, SDSU punter Jason Langland’s punt was blocked by UND strong safety Brad Wagner (Sr., Mandan, N.D.), and UND took over on the SDSU 28-yard line. It took the Sioux just two plays to capitalize. After a one-yard run by Andy Zaun (Sr., Valley City, N.D.), quarterback Kelby Klosterman (So., Spearfish, S.D.) threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Luke Schleusner (Jr., Menomonie, Wis.), who beat his defender deep in the right corner of the end zone. That made the score 19-0 with 4:50 to play in the third quarter, and UND upped the lead to 21-0 on a two-point conversion pass from Klosterman to Zaun. On their third possession of the second half, the Jackrabbits were again forced to punt after three plays, but Jason Langland’s punt traveled just 13 yards from his own 20-yard line, and the Sioux took over at the SDSU 33-yard line. On the second play, Klosterman connected with tight end Travis Headley (Sr., McGregor, Minn.) on a 33-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to make it 28-0 with 3:30 to play in the third quarter. SDSU began its fourth possession of the second half from its own 20. On a 4th-down-and-one from their own 29, the Jacks tried for the first down, but Josh Ranek was stopped for no gain by UND defensive back Danny Lawson (Sr., Minot, N.D.). After Klosterman rushed 24 yards to the SDSU five-yard line, Perkerewicz scored on a five-yard run to make it 35-0 with 0:30 to play in the third quarter. The Sioux scored again in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard touchdown run by Zaun, who got his first touchdown of the year. It was the 11th consecutive home win for North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux had 336 (264 rushing, 72 passing) total yards to 205 (64 rushing, 141 passing) for South Dakota State. Ranek led the Jacks with 68 yards on 19 carries. UND cornerback Craig Riendeau (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) had seven solo tackles, and Wagner had six solo tackles for the Sioux, who recorded three quarterback sacks. Sioux defensive end Ben Dixon (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) had four tackles (2 solo, 2 assisted) and had three tackles for loss, including a nine-yard quarterback sack. For its next game, North Dakota will play host to Augustana on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. South Dakota State will play host to Nebraska-Omaha at 1 p.m. |
