The Sioux (11-1) advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, where they will play Pittsburg (Kan.) State (11-1) at a site that will be announced later tonight. Winona State finished its season with a 10-2 overall record. Klosterman completed 27 of 32 passes for 341 yards and was intercepted once. His six touchdown passes tied the NCAA Division II single-game playoff record set by Portland State's Darren Del'Andrae in a three-overtime game in 1989 and equaled by UC Davis's J.T. O'Sullivan in 2000. Smith, who caught six passes for 133 yards, tied an NCAA Division II single-game playoff record with his four touchdown receptions. That mark has been achieved three times previously. It was first reached by Lehigh's Steve Kreider in 1977, and later accomplished by West Chester's Scott Asman in a three-overtime game in 1989 and West Chester's Brian Penacale in 1994.
FIRST HALF SCORING SUMMARY The Sioux forced Winona State to punt after just three plays, and then came back with another touchdown drive, taking eight plays to move 57 yards to the end zone. It was again capped by a touchdown pass from Klosterman to Kyvig--this time from two yards out. That made the score 14-0 with 3:22 to play in the quarter. The Warriors only managed three plays on each of their first two drives and were held to 25 yards in the first quarter. After punting on its second possession, however, Winona State immediately got the ball back when the Warriors' Steven Koehler (So., Cresco, Iowa) intercepted a Klosterman pass and returned it 35 yards to the UND 29-yard line. From there, Winona State used eight plays to get on the board, scoring on a one-yard run by quarterback Bruce Carpenter (Jr., Johnsburg, Ill.). Kicker Steve Opgenorth's (So., Green Bay, Wis.) extra point made it 14-7. UND was forced to punt on its next possession, as was Winona State, and the Sioux took over on their own seven-yard line with 7:54 to play in the half. From there, UND mounted an impressive nine-play drive that concluded with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Klosterman to Smith. Klosterman completed all six of his passes on the drive, two to Smith. UND kicker Cameron Peterka's (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) extra point made it 21-7 with 3:26 to play in the half. Winona State responded with a nine-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown pass from Carpenter to wide receiver Adam Lilla (Sr., Winona, Minn.) with 21 seconds to play in the half. The half ended with UND leading 21-14.
SECOND HALF SCORING SUMMARY UND's Dan Graf (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards, giving the Sioux a first down at its own 47-yard line. On its third play of the drive, Klosterman threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Smith with 2:49 to play in the quarter. Peterka's extra point made it 35-21. The Sioux defense forced Winona State to punt after just three plays, and the UND offense came back with a four-play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended with Klosterman throwing a 32-yard scoring strike to Smith. Winona State closed the scoring with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was wrapped up by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Carpenter to Lilla with 26 seconds to play.
STAT RECAP UND running back Jed Perkerewicz (Sr., Washburn, N.D.) rushed for a game-high 143 yards on 26 carries, and Klosterman had 49 yards on six carries. UND wide receiver Luke Schleusner (Sr., Menomonie, Wis.) had a team-high seven catches for 62 yards. For Winona State, Carpenter completed 13 of 25 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Lilla caught seven passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors' leading rusher was Curtis Jepsen (So., Rochester, Minn.), who had 43 carries on eight carries.
