UND vs. MSU 'Cats on 09/27

UND heads to Bozeman to take on the 'Cats.  Defensively UND is much improved.  Offensively UND is really struggling.  Looks like MSU is once again a very solid upper tier BSC team.

Few first things that jump out at me considering this game:

UND hasn't played well on the road

Montana State's offense is really good

UND's offense is not good at all

UND's defense has been improving

Judging by the Missouri State game, UND's defense can keep the game close; however, in order for UND to keep it close the entire game and have a chance to win, they have to protect the ball (both special teams aka punt returning and offense), force turnovers, and capitalize off turnovers (no missed FGs).

I consider this game similar to the Missouri State game: similar environment and similar opponent. That game would've been different if the halftime score was 7-3 (no punt return error and no missed FG) rather than 14-0. The little things make a difference; UND will have to do the little things right on September 27th.

I am going to be the eternal optimist!

Stony Brook is solid defensively.  They are #1 in total defense in the CAA so far this year, and they were #2 in total defense in the CAA last season.  The CAA is a good league, right up there with the Big Sky and MVFC.

I am not going to make a prediction on the score against the Boobcats, but I will predict that we get over 300 yards total offense and it will be fairly balanced between run and pass.  Last year we ran for 165 yards on these guys.  We had no help from the defense.  Mollberg started and got yanked.  We all can see that it will take a lot for Joe to get pulled this year, so he shouldn't be looking over his shoulder.  If anything, he should be highly motivated to silence his critics.

Montana's defense is usually decent, but not as good as Stony Brook's, or perhaps even Missouri State's defense......

MSU runs the ball well, but I don't see them getting 330+ like last year.  The defense is playing well, and our linebackers appear to be the best position group we have.

Would be a great game for the offense to finally break out.

Hope you're right!

Anyone going to Bozeman?

Yes I am.   I went to the game 2 years ago.  Nice atmosphere and I believe this game will be interesting.  We will need to be nearly mistake free to have a chance.  Their offense will present some problems for our defense.  Their QB is capable of putting up some rushing yards as well as passing.  They have speed so it will be interest how our OLB's and DB's respond.  They ask play up tempo offense.

If our offense could move the ball some this weekend, which would mean fewer possessions for Montana State, maybe we can stay within 30. Am I being optimistic?

Missouri State is every bit as good as Montana State, IMO. I'm certainly not guaranteeing a win, but I think UND will stay relatively close in this one relative to the Missouri State game (less than 24 point differential vs. Montana State on Saturday).

This is a very good MSU team.  They manhandled a good Central Arkansas team (that lost on a 53 yard FG to Missouri St on Saturday) before taking their foot off the gas in the 4th qtr and made it a two possession final score.  Central Ark was never in position to threaten MSU.

I don't see a UND win, but as the week progresses I could get more optimistic and figure out a scenario where this thing could be a 3 possession game in the 4th qtr.

Let's try and remember that coming into this season, nobody expected this to be a win.  I've noticed as a game gets closer each week, everyone's hopes get a little higher and then people are crushed and angry when UND gets dominated.  Our defense is better, our offense is worse but we still have to keep preseason expectations in mind as we go week to week.
