The Betty Needs a Video Board (or two)

After recent visit, noticed it was lacking some technology. Could use two, one above/beyond each hoop. Or go like everyone else with one big overhead box in middle. This would help with recruiting as well.

So do we get the gobc on this? :-) Local business, alumni, school? Hoping to at least get the people that matter to recognize this need. And hopefully get it addressed.

Not going to lie, this has been a sore spot for me for many years.   The Betty should have been 1. Dug down,  so that you can walk down into your seats (bowl type setting). If you look at traffic on game day of fans getting to and from seats you'll notice it's a mess. 2. Had video boards...at the very least at each end.  3.and a LED/LCD table.   The reality is that these are missed revenue source opportunities for the department/REA/and the programs.    What are we trying to be?  Division 1? One of the top facilities within our conference?  That is a legitimate question.  That's awesome that hockey gets new "state of the art" locker rooms.   But why not look to where there is still a ton of room to grow both competitively and revenue wise in athletics.  I believe that's in the sports that operate in The Betty.   But to be quite honest I'm not seeing a lot going on there, except for the addition of a storage shed...can a business sponsor that and get exposure to fans- like it can with Video Boards or LED table.

Problem with having them at the ends it it interferes when the bleachers on both sides are partially folded up and all 4 course are used.  Only thing that makes sense is a scoreboard hanging from the center.  Not sure why they didn't do that in the first place!

It is amazing how the Ralph is such a first class facility and has all the amenities, and is considered to be one of the nicest sports building in the coutry and the Betty is lacking on so many ammenities.  It should have looked more like what the new SHAC in Fargo looks like as opposed to what they have.  I guess it goes back to what sport that athletic department covits more!!

I'm not sure the Athletic Department, back in the day that The Betty was erected, was even allowed to be involved in the decision (no idea, just speculating). I would prefer a center hung scoreboard, I'm aware of the end bleachers, but I actually think it still would be seen if it was hung, directly under the current scoreboard.   From my seat there seems to be plenty of space to look at  from the top bleacher to the bottom of the current scoreboards.   Heck, anything would be better than we have now.   Let's see, USD- getting a new arena, with toys- NDSU, getting a new arena with toys.  Are we not recruiting against these same schools? even though they are not in our conference, they are in the I-29 corridor, and most likely trying to bring in the same players we are.   Basketball is an arms race, just like hockey and football is.  It would be nice to see us get into the race for once.

I know this idea has been kicked around on this board before, but just out of curiosity, is it even realistically possible to expand the Betty into something at least close to 5000 seats? I realize that increasing the capacity isn't needed now, but at some point I believe it will be. Also, what, if anything, are the long-term plans for Hyslop?

biggest reason why the Betty was done half-assed was bc ralph was dead....if ralph was alive he would have done it right the first time.

Weren't there some time constraints as well? I thought they fast tracked it so that it would be ready in time for the World Juniors?

It is a decent facililty. I hope more seats will be a problem needed to fix soon, but for now it aint bad. The gym does carry sound well and when the fans come its packed and loud. There are a few things I hear are wanted, but one thing I consistently hear about is the lack of a videoboard. I would think MIDCO or some other company would figure a way to get them in and use for advertising.

in the future i hope the bball teams move back to a renovated hyslop and give the betty to the vball program (and keep growing vball...sky's the limit)

with the new indoor practice facility being built a lot of the uses for the hyslop will be down to next to nothing so the whole thing could be bball from top to bottom...

i'm not sure if in the long run swimming and diving would ever move the wellness center if/when they put a pool in there but it they do if would be nice to tear down that crappy add on behind the original building and brought it back to what it looked like in the 50's....but a total gut job on the inside and bring back the hyslop hysteria!!!

Exactly! The hyslop has tradition - think Duke.

I love the idea.  But the standard operating procedure on this campus is to tear old buildings down and start over from scratch.  Personally, I think tearing down a solid structure like Hyslop would be a big mistake.  Putting basketball back in there would be awesome provided they modernized it first.

What buildings are you referring to? Please don't say the old Ralph.

Like to see a Phil Jackson Arena on campus.  Hyslop would have been turned into a Wellness Center if it wasn't for asbestos.

Originally the Betty was only going to be a practice facility, volleyball, and for lesser games.  That way the REA trust took away basketball as a source of revenue.

A new football stadium on campus is the first priority once Phase II of the IPF gets built (other than a new locker room for men's hockey).

i totally agree with your list of priorities...phase two of indoor and then getting chipman and fennell to cut some checks and rea trust to step up with some cash for an on campus fb stadium...i just hope that some or all of these old buildings on campus that are not being used currently are not torn down bc you never get them back...i know it would be alot of money to totally reno hyslop but you can do it in phases. that whole front of the building could be offices for bball coaches, weight rooms, meeting rooms, locker rooms....

call me stupid but i don't think getting hyslop to look like this would be that hard or expensive...no video rings, no replay screens.....i;ve heard about abestos and a new roof but in the long run it wouldn't be that expensive especially if someone wanted their name on the court??? phil? ????

Every time I'm at a game, I spend a good chunk of the time looking around trying to figure out how to improve the Sioux Center.  The best I have come up with is to put permanent seating in at the North end, that goes all the way to the top like the seats do on the East and West.  I think you could also make 4 luxury suites above each restroom entrance.  The portable risers would have to stay on the South end to access the overhead doors.  By my math, this would get little over 4,000 seats in there.

I really like watching games at the Sioux Center, but I agree that the lack of a video board and the sound system in there are bush league.  The fact that these two things haven't been upgraded in 10 years tells me that a new arena or updated Hyslop is at minimum 100 years away.  The basketball programs are pretty low on the totem pole for UND athletics and especially REA.........

what kind of bugs me about some of the ad's that have come and gone over the years is where is the long term planning on facility improvements? ???

alerus-city paid

rea-ralph paid

betty-ralph paid

kraft field-city/park board paid?

choice-city/park board paid

apollo-city/park board paid

i don't think that und has paid anthing towards any of these building? so why don't we have some money somewhere set aside for future facilities?  you would think in say 1965 that someone knew that somewhere down the line that memorial stadium was starting to show age so maybe set aside some revenue from home games for the next fourty years to fund a new football stadium?

i still wonder how much cash rea is hiding in the "las vegas" room in the basement of the ralph...to the detriment of other programs imo (not hockey of course).

Be careful, you'll be accused of not being grateful for Ralph's gift and not just accepting at face value everything you are told. :silly:

Seriously though, I have asked the same question myself.

I heard some talk back during the (mercifully short) Buning regime that Hyslop may have outlived it's usefulness because The Betty had taken over housing several programs (VB, MBB, WBB), along with some talk about all the asbestos that would need to be removed if they renovated it.  That is code for "tear it down".  And that would be a big mistake; it's a perfectly good building.
