Siouxperfan7 Posted December 17, 2014 Share Posted December 17, 2014 While talking to a Bison fan in my family, I had to listen about how the Bison will have yet another nationally televised game on ESPN and how much of a recruiting advantage that is. Which got me thinking, how much of a recruiting advantage is it? Obviously having national exposure will help get the word out about a school and they are going to be seen as a successful program since they are in the playoffs and playing on ESPN. But are high school kids and FBS transfers surfing the TV stations on a Friday or Saturday to see what FCS schools are playing on TV when making their decision to where they will go to school and play college football? There are many factors that go into a kids decision on where to play college football. National exposure is a big one, but it is not the only one and maybe not necessarily the most important. These recruits look at all sorts of variables. Coaching staff, facilities, college campus, programs that they could major in, location. All these things come into play when picking a college. So while playing a game on national television will deffinitely send a message to recruits that you are a successful program, but I don't think it is the end all decision maker for a kid picking where to play college football. UND1983 Posted December 17, 2014 Share Posted December 17, 2014 Can't argue with the exposure, an obvious advantage. They get to showcase their school, dome, and fans. Then, they can go into homes and tell the kids that they play on ESPN twice a year at least, lately. That being said, it is one small factor and wears off as the recruiting process goes on. You also had 2 Gameday appearances in Fargo. NDSU's recruiting classes have gotten better and better. Last year's class with Stick, might be the best NDSU has ever had. You need to look a little deeper, last years class started out great and then was backfilling with leftovers all January. Hell, they offered 4 of UND's commits I believe last January. If they redshirted in 10, they have an opportunity for 4 chippers potentially. Recruiting is an inexact science to say the least. The Gophers get most every MN player they want now and other schools are getting in on the other MN kids. If FBS teams offer, they are getting them now vs 5 years ago. The football team will bring in a couple transfers. Currently we have two or three safeties on the roster, I would be concerned if we didn't look for immediate help there. Funny fact: In Bohls' first D1 year at NDSU (2004) they had 8 Juco transfers and 3 FBS/D2 transfers on the roster. Almost like he didn't like his current roster and knew he had to make immediate upgrades while developing the high school kids.... Very complimentary but spent some time talking about what might have happened if Kill was at UM two years earlier. They figured he would have gotten many of the top talented players that SU got during Brewster's time. I know that has been discussed here regarding the past and looking forward and generally dismissed by SU faithful as sour grapes. It was interesting to hear it from two guys with no allegiance either way and particularly from Reusse who has been very positive about SUs on the air and in the paper. They listed Zach Vraa, Billy Turner, Marcus Williams to start with. Two of them are starting in the NFL I believe. I also found Paul Cornick with the Broncos and from Orono HS..
