2015-16 schedule

On a post earlier this season it was said that UND hosts UNI this next season, I would assume both the SU's will be coming to Grand Forks, anyone else have news on who else or would like to see? I would like to see more Summit teams like South Dakota, Denver, and Omaha permanently on our OOC schedule. Its a lot better than scheduling those worthless Mayville/Dickinson games.

I would like to see NDSU game at the Ralph.  i dont think UNI is big enough to fill it.  But I think you could sell SU as a rivalry game, promote the hell out of it and try to pack the Ralph.  It would be nice to see again.

I get it but I personally thought the atmosphere was much better in the Betty last year vs. the REA three years ago.  Would rather have a full and loud Betty than a half full REA.

I agree. They need to keep the games at the Betty unless they host a powerhouse like Kansas.

I hope Mayvillle and Dickinson stay on the schedule - Jones could use the W's to keep his career coaching record near .500.

They should double the height of the risers in the betty for games like uni, ndsu, sdsu, usd, etc... they will pay for themselves and look way better.

There is NO excuse why we don't play USD every year.  Complete incompetence by whoever does the scheduling.

Who does the scheduling? Jones or Faison or both.

You know, this is tough for me. I know Brian Jones agrees with you, so I'm sure the 2015-2016 NDSU game will be in the Betty, but I just think the Ralph should be used to host some MBB games for recruiting purposes and the awe factor. It would give the players a glimpse of what it would be like to play for a Big Ten school and be valued by playing in large venues. The one thing MBB players I've spoke to don't care much about is the obvious discrepancy between the UND's MBB program and UND's hockey program. The basketball-hosting Betty sits adjacent to a building much larger which hosts hockey. It let's everyone know, regardless of familiarity, that UND MBB is an afterthought at UND relative to hockey. I think the MBB players and even fans would appreciate it more if the athletic department would work out one -maybe two or three - games per season in the REA just for the awe factor.

Needing more than 3,300 seats available for a basketball game would be a good problem to have.  Until then, let's keep it intimate at the Betty.

There will always be at least one or two games like that on the schedule.  UND is not an anomaly on that.  Minnesota played UM-Duluth and something called Franklin Pierce this year.  Wisconsin played UW-Parkside.  NDSU played UM-Crookston and Minot State.  They are cheap, early season home games.

I don't disagree with the majority of what you said. But I do think that unless you are going to guarantee at least 4-5,000 people, the atmosphere will be pretty stale, its a big arena.  I thought the atmosphere at the NDSU game held at the Betty was just as good if not better than the one at the REA even though there was around 4,000 less people.  However, if UND could bring in a big name opponent every year or two (not likely, but talking hypotheticals), I think playing a game like that in the REA makes a ton of sense.  They just need to make sure the crowd shows up.

Maybe we could go the dead president route too, and get George Washington on the schedule. ;)

I liked the REA for the last couple time they played NDSU there, when there was 7,000+ there it was a good environment.  But I didn't care for the atmosphere the last time they played USD there, I think in 2010, there were only about 4,300 in attendance.  It is just too big for my liking, especially when the lower bowl doesn't even fill up.

By contrast, once you get above 2,500 or so in the Sioux Center, the environment is excellent.

I agree about the larger risers in the Betty.  If you doubled the size of them that would put capacity at about 4,000 which is just about perfect.

I think tonight will be the last time we see Omaha or even USD here any time soon again.   Their proximity to other schools will see them look elsewhere for more affordable non-conference games.   It's all about the bottom line.    Places like Northern Colorado, Central Arkansas, and Chicago State (on the Mavs sked this year, not sure next year) offer a school like Omaha the same or shorter bus trip.  For us and our perspective, Omaha fits as a non-conference game that makes sense.  For Omaha, they have far more options available to them, and I anticipate they will utilize them.

Was there ever any confirmation that UNI is coming next season, or was that just an assumption?  If they are coming to GF, it would definitely be part of a 2-for-1 contract, which could easily mean we are going there again next season.

Getting a little ahead of the topic, but the Herald says that UNI will be making a return trip to Grand Forks in 2015-2016. NDSU will also be coming to Grand Forks and I'd assume SDSU will as well. Not a bad start to the home OOC schedule for next year.

I tend to agree with you on UNO.  They are kind of like Denver, in that due to the hockey relationship, Sioux fans feel like they should have that angle to get games with them, but they never materialize.  We have never scheduled them since we left DI.  All three games are the result of either the Bracketbuster or the CIT.

I have been more perplexed by the absence of USD on the schedule lately.  USD may have a few more options, geographically speaking, but still they need DI home games too.  Have to think North Dakota would be one of the most attractive non-conference home games they could schedule on a regular basis. NDSU, SDSU, and USD can basically all guarantee themselves one non-conference DI home game every other year in perpetuity.

I don't disagree with any of this. The problem is for every one of these games, you are sacrificing a money game.

Not really I don't think.  Take USD for example.  This season they finished up home-and-home arrangements with Cal State Northridge and Utah Valley.  We have played the XDSU's every year for 5 straight years, so obviously it can be done.

Ideally, this is how I'd like to see the non-conference schedule, which is typically 10 to 12 games:

3 money games against power five conference teams (this may end up being 5 games total if one money game is a part of a tournament);

1 game against an NAIA opponent (I don't like these but they seem inevitable. Let's just keep it to one per year, please);

4 to 6 games against Summit teams, along with the occasional Missouri Valley team. These would all be part of home-and-homes, so that there should always be at least two decent home non-conference games per year.

Is this at all realistic? I have no idea.

It was from an article in the Herald that is now behind their paywall.  I believe it was a 2-1 and UNI is coming here this year but can't currently verify it.

The number of money games was slightly higher this year due to the upcoming trip.  Guessing they could have swapped at least 2 of them for home/homes.

Guessing you'll still have 2 sub D-1 schools on the schedule just because they are cheap home games.  But overall, I think its doable as I would think the xDSU's will remain in the home/home arrangement.  Add USD and try to get some rotation of Drake/UNO/UNI/etc (though some may require a 2-1).

Re: USD, I'm wondering if there is still a little bit of issues due to the whole Big Sky/Summit fiasco.  No other reason not to have them.  Agreed that I'd like to see the other three Dakota schools on the schedule every year.  Then sprinkle in some pay games, MVC and/or Horizon teams and some trourneys.

Easier said than done, I guess.......

I'm thinking the USD FB team's destruction of an Alerus Center locker room may have soured things a bit as well.

Maybe a little, but we did sign a home/home with them in FB so maybe basketball isn't too far behind.
