1986-87 Season Notes
- UND defeated the Spartans for a national title for the second time
- The 1987 title was UND's 3rd in eight years
- Head Coach Gino Gasparini would go on to coach seven more season without
another national title. He accumulated a 392-248-24 (.608) record.
- North Dakota posted a 40-8-0 record in the 1986-87 season (an NCAA
record)
- UND won 24 of its final 26 games of the season
- Tony Hrkac of Thunder Bay, Ont., became North Dakota's first and
only Hobey Baker winner and set a national record for points in a
season with 116
- Hrkac was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and
to the All-Tournament team with Belfour, Kidd, and Joyce.
- Freshman Ed Belfour of Carman, Manitoba, played just a single season
with UND before signing a pro contract. His record was 19-3-0 and he
was named to the All-American second team.
