UND has lost its appeal to the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility for hockey player Ian Kallay.
Kallay, from Whitecourt, Alta., played just two seasons for the Sioux, but was a prolific scorer.
He had 23 goals and 22 assists for 35 games as a freshman, then came back with 16 goals and 23 assists in 41 games this season in helping UND to the NCAA championship.
In his two seasons, Kallay averaged more than a point per game with 84 points in 76 career games. Of his 39 career goals, 22 of them came on the power play. He was penalized just 17 times in 76 games and was credited with four game-winning goals.
Kallay, 23, lost his remaining eligibility because he took enough classes in a community college while playing junior hockey in Canada prior to enrolling at UND to be considered a full-time student by NCAA rules.
Even though the college he attend did not have an athletic team, the fact that Kallay was a full-time student started the clock running on the five years an athlete has to complete college eligibility once the athlete qualifies as a full-time student.
Kallay came to UND from the Langley Thunder of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, where he was league all-star game MVP. He scored 56 goals and assisted on 64 others in his last season with the Thunder.
Mark Osiecki, assistant coach at UND, said that Kallay is looking at different professional opportunities, but has nothing lined up at this point.
