1962-63 Season Notes
- Just four years after winning its first championship, UND put its
second championship in the Fighting Sioux record book
- Avenging the loss to Denver in the 1958 title game, the Sioux
defeated the Pioneers by a 6-5 score
- UND had also just lost the WCHA Championship game to Denver
in a 4-5 OT loss on March 9, 1963.
- Head Coach Barry Thorndycraft, in the third of his four-year
coaching career at UND, won his only NCAA title in 1963. Thorndycraft
finished his coaching career at UND with a 71-65-8 (.521) mark from
1959-64.
- UND had three first team All-Americans: defenseman Don Ross of
Roseau, MN, forward Al McLean of New Westminster, B.C., and forward
Dave Merrifield of Thunder Bay, Ont. That record stood as UND's
most first-team selections until it was equalled in 1987.
- McLean was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player
