1979-80 Season Notes
- UND's longest NCAA Championship drought, 16 years, ended in 1980.
UND had lost 3-4 in 1979 to Minnesota in the title game.
- The 1980 championship was the first of three to which head coach
Gino Gasparini would lead UND
- North Dakota had lost twice previously in the season to future
WCHA conference member, Northern Michigan
- Sioux captain Mark Taylor, who led the Sioux with 92 points
in the season, played only part of the first period in the
championship before an injury forced him to leave the game
- Smail was the first UND player to score four goals in an
NCAA Championship game
- UND first-year goaltender Darren Jensen of Creston, B.C., made
20 saves in the win, ending his season with a 13-0-1 record
- UND had won only one (Dec 28, 1977, 8-4) of four games in UND
history against the Wildcats prior to the 1980 championship
